DEAR BOOKWORM: THE ROMAMNCE BETWEEN BOOKS AND COFFEE
Coffee and Books are pals. I can't tell you when this friendship started but I know it's so strong. I'm not certain if it dates as far back as when whoever the real Shakespeare was was plotting the tragedy of Romeo or as relatively recent as when aunty Agatha was writing They Do It With Mirrors. I'd put my bet on the Shakespeare era. I mean, Marchant of Venice, somebody? Pound of flesh and all? Something was definitely happening there and coffee is the suspect. Anyway, what I want to tell you is, we have all come to admit that there's nothing as satisfying as reading a book while sipping coffee. Rustling sound of the pages flipping, side eye to those who read on electronic devices, can only be best accompanied by the soothing sip from a warm cup of that caffeine goodness with heavenly aroma.
So what's up with this coffee and reading thing? Why is it even a thing? Well, coffee has a legendary super power of increasing mental alertness. This is exactly the same powers you need to keep reading and never tiring. No bookworm ever want to run out of steam while in the middle of a steaming read. For generations of bookworms, coffee has been a reliable supply of that firepower to the brain. Along with this alertness is the juice which helps to process information at a swift rate. So you're reading this John Grisham thriller, plots is twisting like a noose and it's getting harder and harder to keep up to the plot. But then, there's a cup of coffee in your other hand. You're fine. You're following just fine.
This affair between coffee and books has been so cemented in the book community that smart business people have exploited it to some sweet advantage. Café owners have created cozy environments for patrons who come in with books to relax and sip their coffees while reading a book. Some even take it a step further and supply books too. At the same time, majority of city libraries and bookstores now often serve coffee. It's a perfect business combo. It's like running a pedicure saloon and not be selling make-up products too when you know so well 95% of your clients use those products and are likely to use them within hours of patronizing your pedicure services. You don't need an MBA to know these things.
Beyond the feel good of sipping coffee while reading, books and coffee have a shared history of being banned by authoritarian regimes for fear of what level of intellectual thinking independence they inspire and this is not just in ancient times, right in this era, there are countries and states even in the US where books are banned. When you look at it this way, you can say they are just both banned substances society free thinkers use to emphasize their resistance to repression.
Coffee is know to stimulate independent intellectual thoughts in ways only books can compete. It's natural that people drawn to free Intellectual thinking find both coffee and books along the way.
Let us know in the comments if you're an exception to this coffee and reading thing.
